Rebecca Flores Harper (she/her/ella) identifies as a bicultural multilingual Mexican-American adoptee. With over a decade of experience in education, Rebecca has worked with students ages 3-18, families, educators, alums, and community members always with the goal of uplifting children. For the past eight years, Rebecca has worked specifically as a DEIJ leader and is currently the Director of Equity and Community at Hopkins School in New Haven, CT. In 2021, she founded AuthenTEACHCity in order to better support educators, organizations, and community members alike with their DEIJ efforts.

Unlearning Racial Innocence: Colorism in the Latine Community

Embedded in language alone are signs and evidence of how people within the Latine community have a complex relationship to race and ethnicity. We will take a closer look at the language, unpack the history, and examine how it shows up today. The goal: heighten our awareness to shift our perspectives and break the patterns keeping us from true progress.

Our world is full of diversity and human difference. Although such traits enhance our experiences and enrich our lives, they are not always straightforward or easy to navigate. In fact, they are complex, dynamic, and nuanced. This workshop is geared towards parents and caregivers who are eager and ready to learn how to support their children and young people in their lives through ana empathetic and inclusive lens. Parents and caregivers will leave this workshop feeling affirmed, better informed, and with strategies to intervene and guide children of all ages.
